Councillor Dani Hunter: Club President and Mayor, Stratford-upon-Avon Town Council

When councillor Dani Hunter was elected 480th Mayor of Stratford-upon-Avon for 2025/26 she became the youngest ever mayor at 36, and the first Irish female to hold the office.
Dani, who is deeply committed to supporting children, families, and education in the community, is also President of Avon Bowling Club.

In keeping with a tradition which dates back to the Club's 1924 opening ceremony, in July, Dani captained a team of ex-mayors, councillors, colleagues and friends in the annual Mayor’s Match. This competitive friendly against Avon BC members, which she admitted is a particular highlight in her mayoral engagements, raised funds towards the Mayor's nominated charities; Welcombe High School Trust Fund, Stratford Family Club and Ward 12 at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Peter Jones: Club Chair

Maureen and I moved to Stratford from Great Brickhill, Bucks, to be nearer to our family when we became grandparents.  Maureen studied Shakespeare at University and was delighted to be within walking distance of the Theatre.  Over the years we have become settled and have fully engaged with the area and its great diverse activities.

We spend a considerable amount of time travelling whilst we are still fit and able, cruising has become our preferred holiday as we get to see amazing places without the hassle of too much driving and flying!!!

After being involved in various sports over my lifetime, Football and Tennis became too challenging so my introduction to Bowls was very timely.

I am Chair of the Club Management Committee.
Peter Coote: Hon Treasurer & Pickering 1 Captain

I took up bowls in 2019, in preparation for when my body had had enough of competitive athletics.  In 2023, I stopped running, jumping, and throwing and started to focus on my bowls winning the Novice Cup and the Men’s 4 woods.
I feel privileged every time I step on the green at Avon, and enjoy being part of our friendly club.  I am currently Treasurer and Captain of the Pickering 1 team.
Neal Hounsell: Club Secretary & Pickering 2 Captain

Neal has been part of the Avon Bowling Club for 4 years, Club Secretary for the last 2 years and has taken on the captaincy of the Pickering 2nd team this season.
He said, ‘this has always been the club for me, the location, the atmosphere and the diverse and slightly eccentric group of characters that make up the club membership. One of the things that l’ve enjoyed the most this year is introducing newer club members to the world of competitive bowling. Four new players have started playing for the Pickering 2 team this year and while we may not win every match we enjoy them all.’
Maggie Hosking: Social Secretary & Community Bowls Team

The day I walked through the wrought iron gates I was warmly greeted by a friendly member who encouraged me to pick up a bowl and “have a go”.  Was this to be the new hobby that I was looking for?  Indeed it was.  Since that day in 2017, I have been involved in most aspects of the club, enjoying mixed friendly matches and, as I gained confidence, taking  part in the Ladies matches, KDL league matches and club competitions.  I particularly enjoy “rolling up” with other members who have become friends.  My greatest enthusiasm is for Community Bowls on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon – encouraging folks like me to walk through the wrought iron gates and “have a go”.
Jonathan Dixon: Club Captain

I started bowling 4 years ago after swapping a golf driver club for a set of bowls!  I really did things all wrong . . . learning how to bowl by playing competitive matches and there were no end of experienced bowlers happy to put the “new kid on the block” in his place.  A steep learning curve indeed!  This is why I am so passionate about ensuring anyone who comes into the club is able to achieve their personal level of playing in a structured way.

I am now in my second year as Club Captain and I recognise we are going through a period of change, but with a strong Club Management Team and an enthusiastic and experienced Team Captain Group, I believe we have the right people in place to manage the transition to become a bowls club which is both friendly and competitive for those members who want to test their bowling skills.
Adele Cooke: Social Member & Webmaster

In Jul-2022, I came to Community Bowls with my dad, Jim, who has dementia. As a former keen golfer, I wanted something stimulating for him that we could play together. Everyone was so welcoming, and offered us a safe space to “have a go”. With patient coaching and support our confidence grew and Community Bowls quickly became a regular fixture in our diary.  We joined as Social Members to be part of all the fun social events too. As Webmaster, I work on the Club’s website helping to make it a useful resource for Members and any prospective newcomers. I also administer the Club’s Facebook page.

Derek Ridley: Playing Member

It would be rare indeed to visit Avon Bowling Club and to not find Derek Ridley on or around the green.
Dereck is a lifelong Aston Villa supporter and as a cricket fan was a former member of Edgbaston.  He decided to give bowls a go after injury forced him to retire from walking football.
Derek joined Avon Bowling Club in 2017 and was one of a cohort that included Maggie Hosking with whom he now runs the popular Community Bowls Program.  As part of this intrepid duo, Derek has played a fundamental role in helping to introduce others to the sport.
A regular in the Pickering Triples 1 and Kineton League teams Derek has also enjoyed repeated success in the Club Men's Pairs Competition, winning alongside varying partners in 2019, 2021 and 2024.
Not one to miss a social event either, and marking an entirely different scorecard, Derek tries to bring some semblance of order to our often raucous social club Quiz Nights by collecting the papers after each round and keeping the all important tally.

William (Bill) Crutchley - Playing Member

Bill, a former fireman with the MOD and a qualified football referee, came to the sport almost accidentally when looking for a means of exercise following a health scare.   As is common among members, he too saw a game going on, and thought “this is something I could do” and was invited to join in and give it a go.

Bill, who now boasts over a decade’s experience, started his bowling career at local Warwickshire rivals, Wellesboune Bowling Club, where he played competitively alongside his equally capable siblings, (brother, Michael Crutchley and sister, Cynthia Bailey also now Avon Members).  His name is listed twice on their honours board.

He has played representative matches for SWBA, has previously captained Avon’s Pickering 2 Team and at 85 years young, remains a regular name on their team-sheet.

It was Bill’s intention that his eponymous Triples Shield would give newer/less experienced club members, if drawn alongside more seasoned players, a chance of winning something at Club level.   Now in its 4th year, it has proved to be a popular event on the Club’s fixture list, with the winners names appearing on the Shield and each taking home a small replica keepsake.

Kevin Hand: Club Playing Member

I joined Avon bowling club in 2011 after enjoying an evening of bowls at annual Mayor’s Match where I played for the opposition! Becoming a member in that year I have filled the roles of Club Chairman and Club Captain.

With an interest in theatre it is not surprising that the connection between bowls and Shakespeare fascinates me. The Bard references lawn bowls in at least 5 plays including RichardII and Troilus and Cressida. Throughout the summer I report on Avon’s successes on the green and arrange photo opportunities with the Stratford Herald.

Avon’s riverside location make it one of the prettiest venues in the country. Buildings are well maintained and there is covered seating from which you can watch the action. The club is well managed developing players to County standard as well as providing a wonderful community bowls programme. Once hooked members tend to stay.
